Bird monitoring studies carried out in Istanbul New Airport has been supported by avian radar since October 2014. The bird radar was renewed in October 2017 with a more advanced system. The two parabolic antennas, follow birds in a broad field during day and night by scanning 360 degrees. It records bird movements up to 20 kilometres.
Thanks to the X-band parabolic antenna, it is able to give the 3-dimensional (latitude, longitude, altitude) position information of the birds it follows. Apart from the altitude and location of the birds, it also provides information on speed, size and flight direction. It also provides detailed statistical and visual reports on bird movements thanks to its advanced analysis software.
